about Alexandre da Cunha

°1969, Rio de Janeiro (BR) – lives and works in London (UK)

Alexandre da Cunha deals in his work with found and cheap or unpretentious materials, which originate from the domestic environment. In these apparently altered pieces, the implications of the political appear are presented through the precarious and banal. Assembling different kind of materials, da Cunha thus reinterprets their implicit meanings. Recent work of the artist directly refers to the art systems and to Modernism: through the use of low-cost materials, he scrutinizes the perception and cognition of art as well as its value.

Alexandre da Cunha has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at MCA, Chicago; Camden Arts Centre, London; and CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco. His work has also been shown in several group exhibitions at venues such as Zabludowicz Collection, London; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; and ICA, Boston. He also participated at the 30th Sao Paulo Biennial in 2012 and the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.

His work is present in many important public and private collections, including the Tate Collection, London; Museu de Arte de Pampulha, Belo Horizonte; and Cisneros Collection, Miami.
