about Ahmet Ögüt

°1981, Diyarbakir (TR) – lives and works in Amsterdam (NL), Berlin (DE) and Istanbul (TR)

Ögüt’s output over the last years spans video, gallery-based installations, site-specific sculptures or long-term pedagogical programmes. In his practice, which always responds to a specific socio-political context (often concerning his native country Turkey or the Netherlands, where he has been based for the past several years) he is both poetic and pedagogical. Through this practice, he tries to emphasize that the language of art always has political implications.

Ögüt constantly aims to engage audiences and debates outside the field of art, understanding that artistic thinking can be best deployed when it steps outside its own frames of reference. Other facets of Ögüt’s practice draw on metaphors, reenactments or interventions that show a more playful approach to the subjects, histories and contexts he wishes to address. All of the artist’s interventions invite us to think about the role of art in questioning and unsettling accepted givens. As such, Ögüt’s approach manifests the fact that art has the capacity to make us ‘imagine the world otherwise’.

A selection of Ahmet Ögüt’s solo exhibitions include Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Kunsthalle, Lisbon; Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig; Kunsthalle, Basel; Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana; and Museum Villa Stuck, Munich. His work has also been shown in numerous group exhibitions including Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei; 13th Biennale de Lyon in 2015; 19th Biennale of Sydney in 2014; ICA, London; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; MCA, Chicago; and the Bucharest Biennale 5 in 2012.

Among others, his work is represented in several public and private collections, including Sammlung Goetz, Munich; FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, Dunkerque; Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis; KIASMA, Helsinki; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; and Fondazione Giuliani, Rome.
