Adriaan Verwee

°1975, Ghent (BE) – lives and works in Ghent (BE)

Adriaan Verwée’s sculptures and installations often oscillate between remnants and completed works, thus questioning what an artwork might be. Combining abstract geometric structures with objects or pieces of furniture, Verwée creates unique compositions made of wood or plaster. As a result of his strong interest in architecture, the surrounding space can be seen as central in his artistic practice. As such, his installations can be considered as attempts to give form to emptiness and to create a certain tension in the given space. Photography also plays a fundamental role in Verwée’s work, because of its qualities both to capture everyday impressions as to document his modus operandi.

Adriaan Verwée has had several solo exhibitions, including Arcade Gallery, London; Museum M, Leuven; Loods 12, Wetteren; and Netwerk, Aalst. His work has also been shown in numerous group exhibitions, including Heterotopias (curated by Syrago Tsiar) at Thessaloniki Biennial; CHIPKA (with Stijn Ank, Susanne Kriemann, Tamara Van San, etc.) at Netwerk, Aalst; Time, Space Pokerface at Be-Part, Waregem; Chaplini Gallery, Cologne; Galerie Tatjana Pieters, Ghent; and Brakke Grond, Amsterdam.
